SOC 4773/6773: Community: Organizations and Relationships

This course addresses one of the most fundamental concepts in human relationships: community. What is community? How is community related to the physical environment and place? Who defines community? These are some of the core questions of both urban and rural sociology that we will address in this course. Although “community” is a basic social phenomena that every individual experiences, there are many important disagreements and uncertainties within sociology regarding the key features that define community, the relationships between community and broader social change, and even whether “community” is still a relevant concept in contemporary society. There is also significant debate about the contexts in which community can be expected to develop or what “community development” might look like. In this course we will delve into these core sociological debates and explore a variety of diverse social contexts for “community.”
